Spending your retirement on the Turkish Riviera? What you should know about residence, health insurance, bank accounts, taxes and receiving your pension.

A mild climate, the sea and a large German-speaking community: many retirees from Germany, Austria and Switzerland move to Turkey. To make the move a success, a few legal points should be settled early.

Residence

There is no dedicated retirement residence permit. In practice, most people apply for a short-term residence permit (kısa dönem ikamet izni), for example as property owners or on the basis of their own means. After several years of uninterrupted residence, a long-term permit may become an option. The application runs through the e-ikamet portal and an appointment at the migration authority.

Health insurance

Health insurance is required for the residence permit. Options include private Turkish insurance, under certain conditions the voluntary state health insurance (GSS) after a period of residence, and benefits under social security agreements between Turkey and your home country. Check with your insurer what applies to you. Private policies often have age limits and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Bank account

To open a Turkish account you usually need your passport and tax number; some banks also ask for a residence permit or proof of address. Requirements vary from bank to bank.

Receiving your pension abroad

Statutory pensions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland can generally be paid abroad. Inform your pension provider of your move in good time. You will usually need to submit a life certificate regularly. Occupational and private pensions may have their own rules.

Taxes

Turkey has double taxation agreements with Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Which country may tax your pension depends on the type of pension and your residence. Tax obligations in your home country may continue after you move. Be sure to consult a tax adviser familiar with both countries.
