Turkish tax number (vergi no): what it is for and how to get one
Little works in Turkey without a tax number: no bank account, no property purchase, often no contract. Here is how to apply for your vergi no.
The Turkish tax identification number (vergi kimlik numarası, often just vergi no) is the key to many everyday and legal transactions for foreigners. You may need it regardless of whether you actually pay tax in Turkey.
What do you need it for? • Opening a bank account • Buying or selling property and the land registry appointment • Rental, electricity, water or internet contracts • Buying a vehicle • Setting up a company or becoming a shareholder • Many dealings with authorities and notaries
Applying at a tax office
The traditional route is a Turkish tax office (vergi dairesi). You present your passport, often with a copy and sometimes a translated passport page. In many cases the number is issued on the spot. Requirements can vary slightly between tax offices.
Online application
The Turkish Revenue Administration (Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı) also offers foreigners an online option to apply for a tax number. Whether and how this works for you depends on the current technical requirements. Status 2026 – please check before applying.
Applying from abroad
Depending on the location, Turkish consulates may also help with obtaining a tax number. Ask the competent consulate in Germany, Austria or Switzerland in advance.
Foreigner identification number
Once you receive a residence permit, you are given a foreigner identification number (yabancı kimlik numarası). In many cases this number is also used as your tax number. Make sure banks and authorities update your records to avoid duplicate entries.
Practical tips
- Write your name exactly as in your passport, including special characters
- Keep the proof of your tax number safe
- Having a tax number does not automatically mean you owe tax, but obligations can arise, for example from rental income
